CASE STUDY:  A case study is an intensive analysis of an individual unit (e.g., a person, group, or event) stressing developmental factors in relation to context. The case study is common in social sciences and life sciences. Case studies may be descriptive or explanatory. The study of a person, a small group, a single situation, or a specific "case," is called a case study. In Forensic Sciences, Crime Investigation and related areas Case Study may be a any Case Example or Case which is solved with the help of scientific techniques etc. You can take any case study or case example from: News Papers, Magazines, Internet, Novels, Newsletter or from Police Websites etc... or you can also write your own suitable case study acc. to to case study questions. Here Case Study may be a Case Example solved with the help of relative forensic principles and techniques. e.g.: In Fingerprint - A Case solved with the help of fingerprint and its verification etc. Case Study may includes details of crime / event happened, evidences found, information collected, acts or laws applied, tests or examinations performed on found evidences, results obtained, equipments or tools used, materials used, procedure followed in investigation or analysis, investigation outcomes, court outcomes etc...

The Jack McKie Story: (Short Case Study Example)

In May 1987, a British policewoman, Jack McKie, was accused of perjury after testifying at a murder trial, stating that she hadn't been in the murder victim's house, where her fingerprints were later supposedly found. Jack's house was searched and she was taken back to the police station where she herself was strip-searched and detained because of a controversial fingerprint that was found at the victim's house. The Criminal Records Office, responsible for the detection of Jack's thumbprint at the crime scene, had 4 experts who certified the authenticity of the fingerprints that they certified, definitely belonged to Jack. However, Jack persisted her innocence with the matter and was acquitted during her trial, saved from a potential 7 years imprisonment after two fingerprinting experts endorsed that the fingerprint did not belong to Jack. After much media activity, legal action and controversy, a member of parliament, successfully requested different fingerprinting experts from around the world to verify the ownership of this fingerprint and have had to date, 181 certifications from 28 different countries that the fingerprint did not belong to Jack. .

OR -  you can introduce this line: Fingerprint belongs from same person and he is arrested now etc..

SCIENTIFIC BASIS OF FINGERPRINT IDENTIFICATION -
1. The ridge arrangement on every finger of every person is different.
2. The ridge arrangement is permanent throughout the persons life, that is, the ridge arrangement never changes from birth to death. These statements are true also of the ridges on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. Identifications in these areas have the same technical and legal validity as fingerprints.

Procedure of Fingerprint Lifting and Examinations:

Dusting, Development and Lifting: 1) Using a soft fingerprinting brush, dip it into the fingerprint powder then tap it against the top of the powder jar to shake off most of the excess powder. 2) Use a piece of clear tape to “lift” the fingerprint from the slide and place the tape on a white card or sheet of paper. Examine the fingerprint. 3) Determine the fingerprint pattern and as much minutiae as possible.

Examination: First step in identification of fingerprint impression experts look for Class characteristics of the provided fingerprint impression the following are the characters which we look for in any fingerprint impression
1. Type of pattern: - It is very essential firstly to identify the type of pattern whether it is Arched, loop or whorl and it is identified by looking following features:-
(i) Type line: - looked for presence or absence for type line and its no.
(ii) Delta: - after identifying the type of pattern is identified then looks for presence or absence of delta, if present then no of delta is counted.
(iii) Core: - Then look for presence or absence for core if present count the no of core.

Select at least one print to examine for minutiae. Note as much of the minutiae as possible, such as islands, ridges, enclosures, bifurcations, abrupt ridge endings, and any scars, and mark at least 10 different points on the fingerprint. The more minutiae you can identify, the easier it will be to match that fingerprint to a suspect. It is this minutiae that makes one’s fingerprints unique from all others in the world.
